What Are Living Dead Girlz?
The Living Dead Girlz is a dance company, a theatrical theater company, a pop culture parody and a ferociously hot gang of talented zombies.
Paying homage to the zombie horror film genre, the Living Dead Girlz parody pop culture with a rambunctious, tounge-in-cheek attitude, event-stopping energy and irreverently bloody antics. Each Living Dead Girlz show is creates a story through extensive choreography, props and prosthetics. Living Dead Girlz shows utilize commercial-jazz choreography along with hip-hop and the occasional break dancing or ballroom dance appropriate to the show.
"Voted Best Proof That The Dead Can Dance by the San Francisco Bay Guardian in 2006!"
HISTORY
In 2004, San Francisco based horror director Shannon Lark recruited Amber Steele to choreograph and act in one of her short films, a tongue-in-cheek music video called "Whatever Happened to The Zombie Killers." In it, a roller derby styled group of zombie hunters laid siege to a nightclub populated by the living dead. The DANCING living dead.
Steele turned to Lark and said, "You know what would be AWESOME? To have my own dance troupe of hot zombie dancers."
Within a year, Steele had gathered Lark, Jessica Beth (a featured zombie dancer in WHTTZK), and women she had go-go danced with in San Francisco such as Samar Soriano, Whitney Moses, Julie Rowlette, and Shamika Baker. Over the next couple of years they played nightclubs and horror conventions across the country with zombie makeup and a giant glitter heart... the LIVING DEAD GIRLZ were born... (or un-born -- the "Z" is for "Zombie.")
"Brains" was the Living Dead Girlz's first made-for-film project. Lark directed this massive feat of collaboration in 2007, a music video spoof of Liam Sullivan's "Kelly Likes Shoes" video. The video starred Steele as Amber, one of a pair of "Scientifically Modified Spawn" on her quest for what she really wanted... delicious brains!
The video shot to number one on YouTube in mere days, and has garnered more than one and a half million views to date.
Now the Living Dead Girlz are in the midst of their 2008-2009 Zombie Nation Tour, bolstered by appearances in New York City, Philadelphia, Wichita KS and San Francisco.
